Wrath of the Lich King Beta Death Knight PVP Nerfs

I’ll never become a fully endorsed Blizzard fan-site because I criticize the developers for some of their decisions when it comes to the game. Case in piont, the Death Knight.

They’re not a broken class in my honest opinion, but a lot of the fun factor was removed for me when they underwent the dramatic changes (strong nerfing of damage) and I personally feel that the issue should have been dealt with differently.

Right now the class doesn’t feel right anymore. It doesn’t really make much sense in a logical (as logical as a video game and Death Knights can be I guess) the way they play. The damage output is very meek compared to most classes out there, and it just doesn’t fit the kit of the class.

You’re a DEATH KNIGHT. You hit like a level 60 in blues with your special attacks and abilities. Doesn’t feel right. Now they’re once again getting the nerf because Detah Knights coped and adapted to their nerfs by becoming a very defensive class that no player could kill 1 on 1. This was a big problem and does need to be nerfed. And so they have.

We’re starting to get a lot of PvP data in, and several classes are having trouble beating rogues, Frost mages, Ret paladins and death knights.

Death knights have a lot of options at the moment, which is cool, but makes it really hard for another player to catch a break and burn a death knight down. So we’re going to try some changes. I won’t sugar-coat it — these are nerfs.

– The ghoul is doing too much damage. He is receiving 100% of death knight strength, which is much higher than most pets.
– Chains of Ice is going back to be being dispellable. It is probably the best snare in the game at the moment, for a class that already has Death Grip.
– The same is true of both Strangulate and Mind Freeze. Strangulate’s cooldown is going to go up. Mind Freeze remains the quick interrupt.
– We’re increasing the cooldown on Anti-Magic Shell. We don’t think this will hurt DKs in PvE much, and it still leaves you with Icebound Fortitude to use often.

As always, if we overdid it, if DKs are now too weak in PvP, we’ll adjust. But we were at the point where we weren’t getting a lot of good numbers because some fights were just over too quickly. (src)

I’ve always been the kind of player that enjoys when the mechanics work, the gameplay is engaging, and my character actually fits within his “kit”. My shaman for example is an enhancement spec’d brawler. With the changes in Wrath I feel even closer to my shaman because I’m a true hybrid of melee and spell based damage with utility to help myself, my group, and now FINALLY to survive encounters with stronger “pure” DPS classes.

I don’t feel that sense of synergy with the Death Knight anymore. I’m a big plate wearing, badass looking, 2H wielding, finely tuned machine of wanton destruction; that spams a lot of very weak little pin prick attacks with massive amounts of survivability.

That feels more like original broken protection warriors to me…

  1. I agree, if they feel like warriors at all, they should feel like big arms warriors…

    I’m a little skeptical of Blizzard’s attempts to make so many tank classes. Or at least to make them viable in every setting and to do more damage. I plan to level a DK simply because a tank is the only thing I don’t have. However, I’m just not sure how it fits the ‘Death Knight’ image. Ah well. I guess we’ll see.

  2. It seems that’s just how blizzards roles when testing things. They throw it out there, make it really OP and crazy fun and let people romp around with it. Once the numbers come in, it’s time to throttle back

    A lot of people game wide got hit with the nerf bat, and it doesn’t surprise me at all that the DKs got it again. I was concerned for a while that no other class would have a chance against DKs, making this game very unappealing to me. While I still feel they have way to many tools, there seems to be some hope coming. It just sucks for everyone who’s played DKs through this process, having the taste of TRUE OP only to have it taken away.

    In the end though, they should be balanced with other classes. I don’t care if people want to play the ‘Heroic Class’ card, cause that is complete bullshit. If DKs are supposed to be better and more powerful then anything else, then why would anyone in their right mind NOT be a death knight?

  3. I would agree with you 100% because DKs DO need to be checked in PVP survivability, they can’t be killed. But I still think that Blizzard really REALLY fucked up with the rune system and the play style.

    When you give a class an infinite source of energy to do attacks (rogues) then you need to make sure that those special attacks are somewhat weakened so that other DPS that relies on mana or rage (which run out) have a chance (not the case with rogues lol but that’s blizzard’s words not mine)

    I still think they could have seen the overpoweredness of DKs coming and should have adjusted accordingly. I was around for the big 10k crit days but that’s not what I miss, I miss actually feeling like I’m doing damage. If I want to see little numbers trickle endlessly to kill my target then I’ll play an affliction warlock.

  8. Personally I hope they nerf DKs into the ground, I love playing a broken class that makes it extremely difficult to win in 1 vs 1 scenarios. Creates a bigger rush when I beat down other players.

    The first class I played was a Warlock back in the days when WoW first came out and were nerfed every week. That is, back when it actually took skill to play the class. They ruined it in my opinion the moment they buffed the hell out of death coil and it went downhill from there, the class joined the roisters of ‘easy mode’ and thousands of players that otherwise would’ve stuck to rogues and mages created Warlocks.

    I’m not saying that rogues and mages can’t be played well, it’s just they are classes that you can play mediocrely and yet still get kills with them. Bring on the nerfs, I want a difficult class to play that makes me swear into my monitor once every five minutes.

  12. dk’s are fucking bullshit. aoe’s, dots, a fucking pet, the ability to come back after you’ve been killed, etc. they need to get more than fucking nerfed- it was just a bad idea to begin with. imo delete the DK class and just give everyone who played a tool knight some in game time to compensate and just focus on fixing the classes that they already have.

The overpowerdness the DK’s have, which I personally enjoyed alot was big and enjoyable, also we had alot of survivability. Though, The so called ”Hero” class, was nerfed to even get beaten by Shockadins? And Resto Druids?

    Well, even though we removed Hots by using PS each time, doesn’t mean to make it this bad? I care barelly stay on top 5 DPS on my Battleground, though, 1v1 is a huge challenge for me, as I am nerfed. but..if you are a good DK, you know how to play it, you know how to beat all other classes, obviously. But simply, Blizzard fucked The Frost-Unholy PvP specc, which was a huge hit for death knights. But, hopefully oneday we’ll achieve the OPness we lost. – Those who knows how to play…knows how to beat a death knight, those who doesn’t…well they just suck. My personall opinion.

    I play a DK and i am so nerfed damage-wise. I am having problems holding the aggro of boss mobs when i tank in a group with a pally, or rogue. Even some casters have out-aggro’ed me before and ended up getting 3 shotted by a hard hitting mob. I have learned to build up my armor to the max and using frost presence to further that but if this nerf affects my defense i will be much worse a tank than ever. Also due to nerfs i am hopeless in pvp, i am having some problems even killing halfassed geared 80′s now, and i am decked out in all purple! ive even gotten beaten down pretty far by a pally in blues X(
    I am hoping to get some majorly DPS weapons and the best strength and armor peircing trinkets i can find to try to boost me back to where i have a chance again. I hate warlocks and pallies now [l===<EEEEEEEEEEE) <l== Nerf Bat to you!
