Remember When: The Golden Age of WoW Makes a Comeback
Lately I’ve been finding myself running through the classic raids and dungeons with my Lv 80 Paladin and turning down Northrend heroics and even Naxxramas and such. Tonight for example I’m going to have another legacy raid night where we spin a dial and randomly hit up two raid/dungeons.
I’ve been clearing Onyxia whenever the lockout is done and just the other day, killed Hakkar out of spite. I’m still excited and content in Northrend but so much has changed in the past four years it’s been a little overwhelming. Looking back I miss a lot of things and after giving it some time to see if it’s just nostalgia making me forget the bullshit times, I can pretty much say with confidence that I miss the good ole days.
Thankfully, Blizzard has decided that some of the more asinine restrictions be lifted.
We’ve made some changes to several dungeons to allow easier access for players in the upcoming patch.
- The ritual objects that used to require 3 players to activate in Blackrock Spire and Uldaman now only require 1.
- You no longer need quintessence to summon Majordomo Executus.
- You no longer need the Scepter of Celebras to teleport to the final section of Maraudon.
- You no longer need the Mallet of Zul’Farrak to summon Gahz’rilla.
- Nightbane is also being made accessible without the urn.
The Scepter and Mallet both turn into actual weapons. The change to the Mallet and Scepter into weapons will also change the existing items. (src)
Here are the top 3 things I miss most.
- Single server Battlegrounds were the best. Oh man those were GOOD times. PVP Guilds actually existed and that was some of the most fun you could ask for. Organized raids on cities were abundant and commonplace. You would queue into a battleground and know you were in for a good fight or going to get steamrolled. Seeing Grand Marshals and High Warlords was a mixed emotion; there would be jealousy or loathing where you realized this person must have not bathed for a good few weeks or just cheated by having multiple people controlling the account; or you would be inspired to fight harder to reach that point. I think the highest I managed to get was Rank 10 before real life intervened.
- Epic land mounts were 1000g and were damn hard to obtain since gold wasn’t nearly as easy to come by. There were no daily quests either and the market was usually owned and run by gatherers providing mats for raiding guilds.
- Gear really was epic back then as well. The difference between blues and epics was astronomical. You’d see a warrior running around in full T2 and you knew to thank god he was on your side, or simply turn around and run. Then there was my love affair with the Arcanite Reaper. The amount of sheer brutality I brought down with that motherfucker and Windfury was enough to make you cry.
How many of you have actually been players since that fateful November so long ago? What do you miss?

Ahhh i so agree with everything you’ve said, i may not have done much pvp back then but i still wear my corporal title with pride just to show i was there
and about when epics really were epic, i agree, you look at a piece of t1 or t2 and see that enourmous list of stats and were like “Woa! thats mental!”
I too am a big fan of the past, as you said, seeing a player run around in full tier 2 gave me goose bumps knowing that he collected the full set and the fact that there was so much more competition back in the day with the 40 man raids. Now we see someone in tier 7 and it doesn’t shock me nearly as much. The fact that you can get 2 of the 5 pieces from heroic badges rly undervalues the epicness of the gear. They need to bring back raid/heroic attunements, it’s so much more rewarding knowing you worked hard to get where you are. Hell within 2 hours of me hitting lvl 80 I was in a heroic instance and doing fairly well on damage… WoW is too easy?
I miss my old hunter… he had the stave/bow, and all giantstalker minus the helm… I miss MC raids. IT got to the point where we could down Rag and half of us were drunk off our a$$. I loved it, and miss it.
You could tell that me and my guild were too drunk to play when we were trying to duel and shit after lavapacks. My GOD I miss those days. Or some afternoon delight during the majordomo fight since I didn’t have shit to do lol
I remember running around with the main horde PVP group on my original warlock; the ones who were going for high warlord. There was a night elf rogue shooting for the same title in the opposing alliance group who was a real bastard and a gnome rogue named Hide who would _somehow_ manage to cap flags in AB without anyone seeing it juuuuuust when it was most critical. Coincidence or hacks? Ahhh, that’s back when fear lasted the full time and broke way less often.
glad to see you’re alive bro I’m liking where the comic is going. and yeah I remember the HWL and Gm days, what a freaking crazy endeavor that was. the 2nd guy on our server to get grand marshal was a NE rogue and he confessed over vent to me and a buddy that when he wasn’t in WSG he was at the barrens wsg queue spot killing horde. claimed that trucker pills helped him get through it.
