Let’s get creative with WoW

I share this image to make you smile...

I’m posting this little rant as kind of an addendum to my most recent fit of verbal diarrhea, where I basically vented my displeasure and disappointment with the current state of WoW.

What I’m arguing is that the achievement system has opened up a Pandora’s box of crybabies and spoiled brats that have just enough financial pull in their massive numbers, to directly affect the game we play. That recycled recolored models are being passed off as new content when they lack any sense of innovation or any feeling of something truly new. All of this in the name of making it easier for Joe Blow to get his achievement for 50 billion mounts, thus giving him the title “BIGGER DOUCHEBAG THAN SPOONER” which unlike other MMOs, adds nothing to his character in any way aside from a little notch on a size 79 belt, fatass.

Example: The new quest hubs and the general way that this Argent Tournament is being handled is essentially a copycat of the Sunwell Plateau world event on the Isle of Quel’danas. Sure there are different elements and mechanics such as vehicles and phasing and such that you see in Wrath exclusively, but fundamentally its the same. There are kill quests, vehicle quests, collection quests, even a bombing run and more fighting on sailboats. They could take the phasing mechanic and really craft some amazing and engaging stuff with it; but that would take a lot more time in developement and might alienate players who aren’t on the same “page” in the phased area. God forbid.

Give us an underground ZONE to play in, like AQ was conceptualized to be. Make Icecrown Citadel as massive and all encompassing as BRD is. Have the flying fortresses in Icecrown actually BOMB something and the faction that wins out gets double the gold reward at the end.

I’m not asking that the developers and game designers reinvent the wheel with every patch or expansion, but I see subtle hints here and there of the potential in this game and the coming changes that only serves to frustrate me when its otherwise abandoned or resigned to the novelty gimmick game item.

Example: The Sea Turtle mount. What an awesome idea! A mount that actually moves rather quick in water, especially when you’re probably going to see underwater zones or a lot of water overall in the next expansion. It looks like a joke mount and seems to be pretty much meant as nothing more than a joke mount only a few fishermen can get because of the amazingly low and random drop rate. Something to screw around with when you’re bored once you get it.

Passenger mounts. So they nerfed the tundra mammoth and the motorcycle mounts to take fall damage now and work like a normal mount. I’m fine with that. Why not make flying passenger mounts? Special PvP only passenger mounts with NPC guards on them that shoot from their seat or something. Or perhaps a sack of grenades your player passengers have access to when they’re mounted up.

I’m not asking for the game to suddenly be tuned to the extremely difficult, I don’t believe you need to go that far. There is a gray area in the middle where content can still feel challenging and accessible but not wide open for every player to waltz through in an effortless stupor and reap the same benefits as those players that dedicate more time and energy.

I guess overall I’m just disappointed at the direction this game is taking with the PvE content. PvP is another argument entirely. I see so much potential for an MMO that can provide an amazing player versus player experience that remains true to its upbringing. The Warcraft franchise has a thoroughbred worthy of best MMO, period. I want to see all out war like it was originally. I want to see air units, land units, sea units like in Warcraft 2. There should be a fast paced and exhilirating gameplay in effect and they’re almost there. The new battleground is fucking BALLS awesome. Make that into a normal overworld zone or mechanic.

The lore and PvE content is incredible as well. It’s amazing as is, why the need to hand feed the loot to people that crumble when doing a heroic 5man? You can only lower the fruit so far before its sitting on the fucking ground and the starving apes STILL cry foul and demand that for their $15.00 a month you hand feed it to them. This game is mighty accessible already, leave it up to the players now to decide how far they want to go to see the content.

If you think that the World of Warcraft is a hard game and that you’re being denied access to anything in the game, Hello Kitty Island Adventure is over there.

  1. You made a typo. When you said the title would be “BIGGER DOUCHEBAG THAN SPOONER” lets be honest, it should be “ALMOST AS BIG OF A DOUCHEBAG AS SPOONER”.

You are one of a kind friend, and that’s why I enjoy reading this site.

  2. Spooner says:

Wait until Starcraft 2 starts up brother! Readers better install elastic on that tampon because its going to get pretty wild…

  3. Blizz has probably gotten more and more greedy latly and making more and more crappy changes….wonder whats goin on over there.

  4. slayermanny says:

    i love it.

the only people complaining about how hard the game is are such a small segment of the population that no one really cares. and those of you that say its easy, do you have uldar in 25 man on farm status with all the hard modes completed? no? then STFU.

if you guys are such a bad asses, what the hell does it matter to you how easy the 10 mans and the fresh 80 stuff and the new 5 man heroic are? people running around in tier 8 that are bads get booted from pugs anyways, so where is your worry?

people that complain about easier epics for fresh 80’s are like my grandfather complaining about me paying so little for car insurance. stupid, senile, envious, and ridiculous.

gratz, oh you heroes of wow! lo, you are so strong and courageous! awe, shock, and random assortments of good feelings are what i feel as you fly in my direction with your shoulder’s of awesomeness and game changing destruction, on toward you latest charge of clearing this weeks most foul raid! and ye, as you dismount from your factions most expensive mount, surrounded by your brothers and sisters in arms, you raise your epic great axe of the bomb to the heaven and hark “i hate fucking uldar, its so lame. lets just do this shit.” gratz, and onward!

  5. I dont think i talk to anyone that raids in WoW happy about the new badge system. Its insulting and stupid. Yes you can only access particular pieces of loot but its like saying to all those that work so hard to get it, “Why did u even try?”. As for mounts I highly pretty disappointed. The amount of money needed to pay for the Chopper is INSANE!!! and I am an engineer! I sigh every time when i think about what i get out of it and how much i have to spend to get it. Wow!! i get an achievement and the same goes for the mammoth. Is that tone of money only worth an achievement? sigh

“China Gold Miners bought on the internet with my real money ” = achievement hurray!!!!

Ahh i highly agree with Blizz being lazy with the mounts recoloring etc. I want to see new models as much as the next person. I dont want this new badge system. I WANT TRASH in the new RAID! Why are idiots who bitch about time getting what they want when we worked so hard to get it ourselves. In all honesty i have 2 jobs and in my last year of uni. I believe if i can organise myself to get into raids anyone can so time management is an excuse if i ever hear one.

ANYHOW (Bitch button turned off) the only thing i look forward to in the new patch is just the profession fixes and that’s it. As for everything else… at this point i don’t give a s### which is a disappointment in itself.

  6. slayermanny says:

Ryuu7i, good buddy, there a game out there for you. its called eve online. the makers will never take the amount of time you played to become super ultra badass for granted.

  7. That pic made me giggle… as did some of the ranting (sorry, but you have such a way with words) ;) and slayermanny’s first comment..that last paragraph… xD

Spooner, you know I <3 you, but everyone needs to back away from my box o’ tampons. I’m sick of sharin’ ‘em!

There are pros and cons to the changes. How many are listed vary from player to player. I like the overall concept of the badge change because it will be beneficial for our small guild… especially for the guildies that have spent a ridiculous amount of time trying to help others gear up. Time they could have spent raiding in content above where we are at as a guild (whether thru pugs or guild alliance). Instead, they can still work towards some upgrades WHILE helping our newer 80s.

Yet, you are right, there is more creativity they could be tapping into. I like the idea of passenger flying mounts… and especially the idea of PvP mounts with a gunner. That would be awesome. :D

  8. Spooner says:

It’s all a front but thanks for saying I have a way with words :) you and Sideshow do too in a much better way~

  9. Slayermanny, it comes down to the integrity of gaming as a whole. Retooling something to be much easier (nerfing it) or giving work arounds (like the new badge system) is just a step away from entering some cheat codes in my opinion.

It will get to a point where people like me, who like gaming because it is challenging without wanting to throw the controller (and I did beating Ninja Gaiden on Hard, and God of War 1/2 on God/Titan modes respectively) no longer say “this isn’t worth it”… it will be no longer worth it, and people will leave.

  10. slayermanny says:

Spectras, the problem is that 10 years ago you and me and rick were the gaming majority. now we are the extreme minority.

why would i expect a company that big to make a game for some many people hard enough just to suit me. lets be realistic.

  11. Hi, I used to play old wow and some BC, but later I sold my account and stop playing it (around 2.3.9); I’ve been reading this site for a while and I find new mechanics like achievements and that kind of interesting… As a passionate player, would you recommend or think that the game has gotten better enough to buy the game again?

  12. I’m still holding out hope that 3.2 is a load of crap because 3.3 and IC is going to be over-the-top huge and awesome.

  13. slayermanny says:

Dyepez, wait till the new patch drops and then play it again. you’ll level up quick as hell. unless you like the whole leveling up process, in which case just rejoin now.

  14. Pfft, I don’t have a better way with words. :P

@Dyepez – I think part of it might depend on why you chose to leave the game before. Asking if the game is better now is sort of a loaded question. Some people like it better now, some don’t.. and others are ambivalent. Personally, I still like the game very much (I started playing late Vanilla, shortly before BC) and still find plenty to keep me occupied (I am an achievement whore, no question about that!).

  15. I left mostly because I had done almost everything left to do, the game raids were easier and there were almost no challenge… and I also got paid really well for my account and character, but afterwards I was told about Sunwell and then 2.4.3 and the lich king, achievement and proto drakes and DK and whatnots, and I regained the interest in the game…. the thing is, buying the game, expansions, monthly costs, starting again, etc, was It worthy? I ask as what other would do in my case (experienced player in practice but technically I’d be a noob now)…

  16. Dyepez I’ll ask you the same question I think you’re already asking yourself, how can you not? Srsly.

  17. Also I agree with Spectras in that the more difficult something is to do in a game the more I enjoy it. Otherwise is just becomes a Warcraft version of MSN Messenger where no one with a login is refused.
