It’s funny to think that there are a lot of people who play World of Warcraft and yet never played Warcraft III or any of the other original Warcraft games. The fact that this game in itself is a great feat since it took a real time strategy war game and turned it into a vast MMO, arguably the most successful one ever.
So in this installment of Back to Basics, I wanted to take a brief look at the game that heralded the coming of World of Warcraft. Both Warcraft III and WoW were in production at the same time, essentially Metzen and his staff knew the entire story and where things would be by the end of WC3 which allowed them to build so much into WoW and even plan very far down the line.
If you have the collector’s edition of the original WoW you can see in the making of DVD instances like Zul’Gurub, and zones from the Emerald Dream (not yet implemented) in the footage. As well there was concept art of goblin submarines and such, I’ll let your imagination run with that one for a bit.
Either way, WC3 told the story of Arthas, the 3rd coming of the Burning Legion, the origins of the undead Scourge and essentially the first time Night Elves and Tauren were brought into the gameplay. Even with the expansion “The Frozen Throne” we learn more about Northrend and it brings us to present day Azeroth (at the time of WoW’s original release) and yes, even Panderans existed in the game.
This post would be far too long if I went into explicit detail about the game and all the story therein, as well it’s probably going to read a lot more like a Loregasm. But either way I suggest that you go find yourself the Warcraft III Battlechest. It’s only $40.00 and still a very massively played online game via Blizzard’s Battle.net service (100% free) the story you’ll pickup from that game will make WoW all the more enjoyable if you always wondered what was going on and what the significance of most current in game events (like the Sunwell) really is.
