DOTA to help pass the time.
I’m going to assume that most of you at some point have played the original Warcraft games especially Warcraft III and it’s expansion pack The Frozen Throne. I’ve always been a very big RTS fan since the original days of Warcraft & Starcraft and also the Command & Conquer series. Today both Starcraft and Warcraft III are still played regularly and are kind of a big deal around the world. You can watch televised Starcraft matches between players in Korea for example. I have to say that Starcraft itself reinvented the whole RTS genre for me, best one I’ve ever played. For a while now there’s been a player created version of Warcraft III (a scenario if you will) called DotA or Defense of the Ancients.
It’s a really neat spin on the whole RTS feel because it’s played completely different than the normal game. You should read the Wiki for a more detailed look at how the game works but it’s actually pretty immersive. It’s a lot like playing a truncated version of WoW from an overhead point of view. You get your player units (1 per player) these big hero types with different special moves and abilities and such, you level them up, buy gear for them and so forth. The point of the whole match is for your team of up to five players to destroy the opposing team’s ancient (which is actually just this big building. I wanted to get into it and scoured the web looking for little tips and strategies even tutorials (I was surprised at how many I found) to help me get my feet wet with the game.
It’s a fun way to pass some time if you’re looking for a pleasant gaming experience, love the Warcraft universe, but just want to maybe take a little break from WoW. Here’s a short video for beginners that briefly goes over everything. Check the links at the bottom of the post for more information.
