Retirement means you get all the women…

Me and Boomer playing with Undead Goblins

So I’ve been playing Torchlight a lot, damn fun game. I can’t say enough of how much fun it is. It’s HIGHLY reminiscent of Diablo 2, it plays like a refined version of the game only without the multiplayer aspect (which is a little let down) but that doesn’t deter any sense of replayability.

The dungeons are all randomized and loot is as well so no two dungeons will look the same – and I just beat the game.

I got my Destroyer leveled up as a berserker, dual-wielding two big fucking weapons and just mowing down hundreds of rows of monsters until the final showdown with the boss of the game with my trusty dog Boomer immortalized digitally. After a rather anti-climactic ending where my character simply said “The corruption is still around so I’m going to hang out and become more of a fucking badass to fight it when it comes back.” I was given more options to keep playing.

Me and Boomer in our 20's

An NPC you typically speak to for fetch quests gives you new ones in the Shadow Dungeon (which goes on for infinity floors whilst the original dungeon ends at 35) and you still have tons of other dungeons that are opened up by NPCs or via scrolls you can buy off vendors for cheap. It’s just a ton of content left to explore. But one thing stuck out to me, a girl NPC tells me I can retire…

Retire? Yes, it means my character will hang up his twin maces and heavy plate armor and dragonhead for a cod-piece and retire. Essentially this deletes the character, however. I can choose an item from my pack to greatly enhance and then pass down to my next character (presumably of the same family line) as an heirloom. Also my next character already starts off with the same level of fame as my 1st which means better vendors and cheaper prices as well as other goodies. Personally, this is an AMAZING idea that really made me feel like my character was something awesome, it’s closure to the story. It’s a way for the game to say “it’s ok to stop playing this guy, you’re done, don’t worry. Roll a new soul and start him off with some muscle.”

I started this game on normal mode and found it way too easy, but was already too far into the game to quit and reroll halfway through. Fortunately with the latest patch you can change the difficulty with the ingame console. From what I hear on the hardest levels (not hardcore ofc :p) the mindless killing fades away and the game becomes much more tactical, where you have to plan your pulls, tanking, healing and dpsing. Sounds almost like wow! Ill have to give that a try.
