Aion’s Mobile PowerWiki is how MMOs should do it
For all their faults and all the bullshit going on right now with goldspam and other issues, I have to tip my hat to NCsoft and their adaptation of the PowerWiki for mobile phones.
As of right now it’s only available in Korean which sucks, but they are working on translating and getting it to English (and I can only assume all other languages Aion has been localized in). The only other application I have experienced along these lines is the WoW Mobile Armory from Blizzard – so I’ll use that as a point of reference.
I have to admit that the Aion app completely blows the shit out of WoW’s mobile armory. Even if it is in a language I can’t understand. WoW’s mobile armory requires a login as well as server loading times and other delays that only really succeed in bogging down or draining my iPhone – as well if I get a call at some point and get booted from the app, I then have to login again and deal with that. If there’s maintenance then I’m pretty much screwed as well, and finally; there really isn’t much at all that the mobile armory is good for. You can see your character and guild and track some of the Arena PvP shit but for the most part it’s nothing special. Give me a guild chat option or the ability to monitor Auction House sales and such and then we’ll be in business.
So what about the Aion app? Why is it so boss?
- You can browse zones for gethering nodes, monsters (sorted by level) and quests!
- It has an updated news/hot topics section that syncs to show what most people are searching for.
- Being able to scan in game maps with actual spawn locations for gathering nodes, NPCs, and so on.
- You can reskin the app with either an Elyos, Balaur, Abyss, or Asmodian theme.
- You can search for characters as well as look up pertinent server and PvP information.

Well, WoW’s officially on the iPhone…
Blizzard’s finally released a WoW application for the iPhone, granted its the Armory, but I still think its pretty cool. I’m not sure how much the average player will use the application but I imagine its pretty nice to have when you’re on the road (especially access to a guild calendar, if your guild even uses the bloody thing).
Ever wanted to check your raid schedule, look up a piece of PvP gear, or concoct a new talent spec while on the go? The new World of Warcraft Mobile Armory app for iPhone and iPod touch lets you access the official Armory database from anywhere you have a mobile connection, and features much of the same functionality as the Armory website (www.wowarmory.com), including:
- Search for and view any character, item, guild, or Arena team in World of Warcraft.
- Seamlessly import your own character, guild, and Arena team profiles.
- Access your in-game calendar of events.
- View achievement-point leaderboards.
- Plan out talent specs using the fully functional talent calculator.
The World of Warcraft Mobile Armory is available now as a free download from the App Store on iPhone and iPod touch or at www.itunes.com/appstore/.
