Spoon’s Eye View: Dodge, Armor, and Diminishing Returns

Little different here with Spoon’s Eye View. I won’t be doing a class or spec but tanking in general. Now this isn’t going to be a workshop in how to tank because I don’t know it all for one and it way too massive a subject to try and tackle with just one post for two. People are asking about the presence of diminshing returns with Armor and Dodge lately. This screenshot here would be where the alarm is being raised.

Screenshots were taken in retribution gear and talent build so this isn’t really optimal for a tank of any kind. I just turned on devotion aura for the last picture as well, no gear changing.

For the record there are no diminishing returns with dodge and armor persay. According to the Beta forums, the official WoW Wiki, and countless other forum posts; your armor’s damage reduction and chance to dodge doesn’t lessen over time during battle like a polymorph or stun does.

What the DR means is that as you gain more and more dodeg rating, defense rating, parry rating; your values will actually give you less actualy percent to dodge/parry/evade (boss misses you). There’s a threshold limit where if you pass it, the rating values will translate to a lower chance than shown.

Sounds a little complex but there are countless resources for you I’ll link now. The author of Ratings Buster weighed in on the Elitist Jerks forums, and there’s a great thread over on Tankspot that pretty much says the same thing.

There’s a formula for you theory crafters out there but the TLDR version of the entire thing is that no longer will tanks be able to stack any perticular rating (dodge/parry/defense) and attain 100% avoidance. Avoidance being your odds to not get any damage at all such as dodging or parrying or having the boss completely miss you when attacked (and Defense affects your chance to be missed).

In some of the more hardcore raids, having very high avoidance is pretty much fucking crucial since some bosses can outright kill a tank in two hits. Survive one hit, get spammed with heals, avoid 2nd hit, rinse and repeat. Armor as well is affected to a degree by this in that once you reach a certain amount of armor, each point will suddenly do less for you in mitigation that before you broke the limit. So this means that Bear tanks for example cannot simply stack metric shit tons of dodge and armor and easy-mode tank anymore, just liek Death Knights won’t be able to do the same with parry and armor, or warriors with block/strength and dodge etc. Time to rethink how you plan on enchanting and gemming your tanking gear.
