WotLK Quest to unlock Flight in Northrend Walkthrough
So basically we all wanted to know how we would unlock flying in Northrend. Blizzard already told us that at level 77 it would be possible, but fears of a long quest or a money sink were pretty much common place. Reality is very far from that. It’s an easy and fun quest with some good experience and gold rewarded and can be done in maybe 10-15 minutes. Here’s how to learn Cold Weather Flying.
First, Level up to 77.
Make your way to the Sholazar Basin, speak to Weslex Quickwrench in Nesingwary Base Camp and do his questline if you didn’t do it yet, at this point you probably already completed it while leveling.
Once the Spirit of Gnomeregan is repaired, speak to Professor Calvert and accept the quest.
Go to Lakeslide Landing near River’s Heart and talk to Pilot Vic here.
The first quest he gives is a short quest to find his keys in the lake next to him.
The 2nd quest will let you go in a reconnaissance flight with Pilot Vic. After defending your airplane against undead attackers you will eventually have to control it after one of the shot hits Pilot Vic. Go back to the Lakeslide Landing and turn in the final quest.

So do you need to have epic flying in order to get / complete this quest? or is it not “really” a riding skill?

No. It’s not a riding skill it’s like an attunement. There’s no key, no skill, no item. It;s like when you do the quest in Magister’s Terrace, and upon completion you can now suddenly do it on Heroic mode as well.
I don’t even imagine you need the regular flying skill to access the quest however that’d be pointless with how beyond easy it is to get enough gold now.

Awesome for those of us that are broke or getting their WOTLK char into the game late.

Yeah I’m pretty sure that when I eventually get my Paladin to 70 he’s going to be a mix of broke and somewhat look like a clown in purple and pink.

“think its nice to know that we not are going to need things like gold / or to do a day long quest to get that thingy”
unfortunately they changed it in the beta and now you’ll need about 1k gold to unlock flight in northrend. THE GOOD NEWS is that you will average about 24g per major quest done in northrend and there are a lot of quests. if you have some blues, pvp gear, or raid gear going into wotlk, you’ll be vendoring a lot of the quest rewards which will also fatten your wallet.
