Loregasm: The Burning Crusade Part 1
This time on loregasm we’re going to get a little in depth as to what this entire expansion has been about. Why exactly are we in Outland? More importantly how is it that Illidan and all these other freaks are running around being all emo in said Outland? But even more interesting would be why all of the sudden we’re going to the Sunwell?
I consider myself a pretty avid lore buff and will do my best to summarize all the goings on in this expansion regarding the main plot-line of the story we’re playing out right now. So let’s begin with Outland itself; it used to be called Draenor and was named such by the Draenei who arrived here a very long time ago. The ogres and orcs are native to the planet as well as most of the plants and animals that aren’t demons.
The entire planet resembled Nagrand and Terrokar while the more mountainous region was pretty much Blade’s Edge mountains. Netherstorm, Shadowmon Valley, and Hellfire Peninsula looked nothing like they do now so keep that in mind. All orcs used to have brown skin and had great festivals where the tribes would actually come together and the elders and such would swap stories and trade, otherwise they kept pretty much to themselves only warring with each other briefly over territory or fighting with ogres and hunting the wildlife. The draenei too lived on the planet but used their vastly superior technology and magic to shadow themselves and try to live out their lives in hiding and peace as they were constantly being chased by the Burning Legion. Eventually the burning legion caught up with them and began the great corruption of the orcs which is a story for another time.
Fast forward to the era of Warcraft III which takes place a few years prior to World of Warcraft’s launch. Illidan is held up in Outland with his partners Lady Vashj and Prince Kael’thas Sunstrider mainly because Illidan has summoned Naga from the great sea and Lady Vashj was charged by Queen Azshara to server him. As well the Alliance was incredibly racist and separatist against the newly named Blood Elves after the war against the Scourge and the Burning Legion was won. The Alliance kept placing the Blood Elves in more and more losing battles and eventually Prince Kael’thas sided with Lady Vashj who then in turn led him to allegiance with illidan’s forces. Illidan failed Kil’jaden and so was to be punished for his complete and utter massive fail at killing Arthas and so now has made an enemy of the Burning Legion.
To sum up; the forces of power in Outland are Illidan’s forces comprised of demons, naga, bloodelves, and the broken ashtongue deathsworn (leftover draenei that had become corrupted by the loss of the light as well as destructive and chaotic demon and arcane magicks.) Secondly there are the forces of the Alliance that remained behind back when the Dark portal was first destroyed in the age of Warcraft II after the orcish horde were first defeated on Azeroth. Then there are the remnant Draenei forces known as the Aldor and the Naaru that are leading an ongoing war against the Burning Legion itself. Finally there is the Burning Legion that once had a vastly superior control over all of Outland and has been losing ground constantly as more and more otherworldly forces take slices of the pie.
Lord Kazzak (a powerful demon and agent of the Burning Legion on Azeroth) obtains a relic of great power that has yet to be identified and reopens the Dark Portal. His exact motivations are sketchy at best. There are many different motivations. It could be he was trying to vie for dominance and needed to pull more demons as recruits and intended to lead a 4th invasion of Azeroth utilizing the dark portal. As well maybe he was retreating as once ever so often a group of 40 adventurers would bring him out of hiding and kill him for a shot at some nice loot. Or simply he was ordered by Kil’jaden to reopen the dark portal and send his forces to go deal with Illidan once and for all.
Whatever the reason, the powers that be in the horde and alliance caught wind of this and sent in a preemptive strike fighting off Kazzak’s minions throughout Azeroth and then finally at the great battle of the Dark Portal (which I got a swank tabard from). hundreds of alliance and horde soldiers poured over the Blasted Lands and waged a fierce and completely chaotic battle at the massive stone gateway to Outland, fighting off each other for control of the area as well as the seemingly endless stream of demons trying to keep us from establishing yet another foothold into their conquered world and weakening their grasp just a little more.
If you weren’t paying attention for the first month of the expansion’s release, we won. Now the horde and the alliance has made pacts and alliances with many different factions in Outland and are beginning to fight in the bloody Burning Crusade.
Part 2: The Aldor and the Scryer’s mission to deal a deathblow to the Burning Legion, will be up soon!
