Dual Specialization Talent Trees still Coming?
It was something tossed around Blizzcon and the Worldwide Invitational during Wrath of the Lich King’s very early days; players might be able to have two preset talent tree builds they can swap in and out.
This would basically mean that a Paladin could setup a protection build for raiding and a retribution build for PVP and not have to drop 50g on resepcs every time he switched. Tigole commented the other day:
We’re defintiely pursuing the ability to switch specs. The details are still being debated internally but we do have plans that would allow for players to switch between specs.
We want every spec to be viable, as you say. But the truth is, in end game raiding or end game PvP (Arena in particular), there is a big difference between “viable” and “the best”. Players will always perceive certain specs to be better than others in end game activities and it would be misleading to imply that all specs are going to be universally ideal for all situations. But viable is a different story.
I imagine by this stage we wouldn’t see it until a patch after release?
Most likely in a patch but it’s not too far off. (src)

I hear that… I’m a BM hunter and have laid out one spec for if my pet is tanking, another if he’s DPSing. Would be awesome to have two for raiding, BM and MM, based on if the fight is pet-friendly.

Yeah exactly! Even if you’re a survival hunter in the arena or for PVP but you raid as marksman for the added DPS. I can see how this would be even more pro for priests that want to heal but then go shadow when not raiding

I wonder how they’re going to allow you to switch specs… will its be as simple as a warrior changing stances?… ie. do it mid fight? will you have to go to a trainer like respecing now?.. or some kind of “out of combat” cast spell with a cool down?..
im not sure what i would prefer.. as fun as “spec dancing” would be say on my mage with 1 pom pyro and the 2nd deep frost… would rock in bg’s and arena.. but probably a bit too OP to ever see in live..
goin to a trainer would be ok in the fact that you could change specs as many times as you wanted as often as you want.. but the down side is you still have to go to the trainer..
the last is likely what it would be.. something you cast out of combat… it’d be good cause you could do it anywhere if need be. like in the middle of a raid if your healer or a tank DC’s… but if they put a cool down on it.. you might get screwed if say you finish up tanking something.. you pop you respec and decide to go pvp.. and then you get invited to go tank something else… you boned cause you already used your respec.

Ya a 24hr cooldown so that after your raid you could blow your CD and then go pvp a little or get your games in before you log for the night.

err…12hr so you could switch back to raid the next day.

My guess is that you would have to talk to a trainer and ask them to use your second spec. That way it could not be done on the fly and would take you far from combat. My guess is you couldn’t do it on your own, but would need an NPC to initiate the change.
It might not be ideal, but I see it as an easy way to “control” it.

i was thinking more like an hour cool down… like battle rez or rebirth type abilities… long enough that its not going to end up exploited in PVP/raids… and short enough that you wont have to regret doin it for a whole day if you end up switching and not needing too..

A cooldown doesn’t give user enough control though. Let’s say that you are going to raid for the evening, you’re specc’d for raiding. But the raid is full, so you decide to change your spec to farm crap for the night. You change your spec your cooldown starts, but wait, a spot in the raid opens up! But crap! I can’t change back for 11 more hours!
They will most likely do it through a trainer, that way you can talk to them, change, but if in an hour you want to change back, go to them and change back. It’s not exploited because you have to talk to the NPC. But it’s not limiting if you want or need to switch back in an hour or so.

No matter the CD, you would will be able to respec at a trainer as currently on live. Having to return to the trainer to get the respec defeats the whole point, 50g will be minimal at 80, its already low enough to respec twice daily and pay it back with a few dailys.
I see the system as letting you store 2 talent specs, which can each be unspeced as you currently do now at a trainer. Switching between them will have some cast time/out of combat requirement, and a cool down long enough so you cannot simply change it for every second pull (raid stacking without raid stacking is something im sure they want to avoid)
No matter what they do I cant wait
Respecing for raiding/arena is getting old.

Kinda missed the point I was trying to make, IMO they will have to have a CD on the ability, and if you find you are stuck and want to change spec, you can always just respec old school. Maybe they will have a lower cost to force a change while its still cooling down at a trainer, than the full 50g to respec fully.

Here’s a solution:
When you enter a 5-man: Your spec changes to what you have specified your “5-man spec” to be.
Same for when you enter a BG, an Arena, a Raid or when you are out in the world… your spec changes accordingly. So, basically, you only ever pay to change your specs which allows you to change any/all specs in any/all situations. This defeats the opportunity to exploit and allows your character to change depending on the situation.
The only drawback is that you can’t switch between a healing pally and a tanking pally in a 5-man or raid… but I don’t think that is the intention of developers anyhow. If you want a healer and a tank, get two maxed characters for that.
My system allows you to customize/maximize the effectiveness of each character in each situation instead of having to decide on what to sacrifice: your leveling, your viability in raids, or your ability to be effective in PVP.

i dont like the idea of it changing your spec when you enter an instance.. being a prot warrior most of the time because i tank in raids i also have a FULL change of gear for dps and like to dps in 5-mans.. so with it doing auto spec changes i’d still have to pay to respec all the time.. i doubt you’ll ever see it auto change peoples specs.. thats like bliz saying your a priest.. you have to be holy in every raid/instance.

Stonekee –> you’d be the one obviously setting the spec options, not blizz. You set the build you want to use when you enter an instance, or a BG, or a raid. If you want to use the same build in all three, then go ahead.

I see what youre saying.. it just seems way to complicated for classes with completly different roles based on spec.. that way would work awsome for my rogue or my mage entering an instance and swapping to my dps raid spec or going into a BG and swapping to my survivability spec… but it seems way to confusing for say my warrior going to DPS a 5 man and then tanking the next 5 man.. guess we’ll have to wait for some more blue posts to tell us whats goin on…
reguardless of how they do it im still pumped… i’d be one rich mofo if i wasnt respecing all the time to raid, PVP, arena, farm, etc etc… it sucks having to go do dailies everyday just to pay for respecs and repairs…
