This is going to be useful. I figured this out on my own and seem to have no trouble anymore doing the daily Torch Catching quest, however I know that a lot of you (and my wife) are about ready to go into fits of pure hate fueled rage because they can’t get the quest done. So here be some tips that might take the edge off a little bit. As well I found the best time to do the quests is early in the morning or very late at night when there’s only about 2-3 other people nearby doing it.

1) Less populated cities are better, as there are fewer torches flying around.
2) Zoom your camera all the way out and move it to roughly top-down, in order to track the shadow better.
3) Follow the shadow, not the torch, and lead it a little bit — stand a bit in front of where you think it’s going to fall.
4) Speed buffs can help. (src)
