The Daily Spoon: The Giants of Northrend.
This is an awesome concept. When I first entered Hellfire Peninsula and heard (let alone saw) a Fel Reaver, I damn near messed myself. This is going to make Fel Reavers look like kittens. (src)
The Northrend giant is another example of the marriage between the epic and lighthearted themes that influence the look and feel of Wrath of the Lich King.
These terrifying creatures are the largest to date in World of Warcraft. As a frame of reference, the Fel Reavers stomping around Hellfire Peninsula would only come up to a Northrend giant’s chest. They have learned to adapt to the threat of constant attack by creatures much, much smaller than themselves by doing what any sensible giant would do — cover their shins and feet liberally with salvaged items such as castle doors strapped to their feet or dozens of shields covering their ankles. Look closely, and you might see the skeleton of an unfortunate gnome who didn’t get out of the giant’s path fast enough.
However, if you’re close enough to see it, that might be a bad thing…
Looking at the concept art (which lately has been making it to final production a lot) we can see a lot of interesting little details with this giant. He’s using nothing more than one of the massive redwood type trees as a club, with human weapons, a shield, and an anvil tied to it making a flail.
He has doors, tables, shields, and other assorted objects tied to his shins and feet for protection. As well he has a massive sail off a ship around his waist to hide his shame (privates), a bear carcass strapped to one forearm, and for the life of me I can’t tell what’s around his neck but it looks like either a bunch of logs tied together or a cage of some sort.
MOST EXCELLENT!
