More new rules for Arena in Patch 2.4.2
In lieu of all the other changes to the arena coming up in Patch 2.4.2 they have added another rule. If a team does not enter an arena match that is starting they will lose points equal to the amount that would have been deducted if they had played and lost. This change makes it less viable to participate in illegitimate team match-ups by requiring every game be played; not just those that are against a team’s desired opponent. (src)
I really don’t know what to think about all of this. I don’t like where it’s going at all and where we’re at in regards to the PVP aspect of this game. For the sake of the future in PVP I hope that Lake Wintergrasp and the new BG coming with Wrath of the Lich King is AMAZING.
I posted the changes before but I figured this would be as good a time as any to take another solid look at what the implications of these arena changes mean for the whole of PVP. This diagram from WoW Insider pretty much paints the picture for you better.
The face of PVP has completely changed in that even honor point gear now has a rating attatched to it. I understand Blizzard’s motivation to do these changes and their argument holds water. But frankly, the arenas are NOT the only venue for PVP in the game, and unfortunately the way the system stands anybody just joining the Lv. 70 PVP bracket is going to get steamrolled very very quickly.

I don’t PVP myself though I did very briefly to get the Totem of Impact — which turned out poorly. In any case, from what I’ve been reading here and hearing from my friends and guildies that do PVP it really seems like PVP was an afterthought sort of tacked on with a rather slipshod application that was more miss than hit.
The bits of it that bleed over into PVE are sometimes a bit of a pain, like some class changes that were obviously meant as PVP balancers.
I don’t really see a fix for it other than either eliminating PVP entirely, or scrapping it and building it again from the ground up using the unfortunate mistakes they’ve been making as guidelines for what not to do.

I just started an arena team with my shaman on wednesday of last week, we did our 10 games in 3v3 because, quite frankly, we got rolled all but one time in under 30 seconds. Our “best” was getting a rogue on the other team to 1 or 2% while i kited the warrior and their healer oom’ed. Shortly after i went oom, got caught and 2-shotted by the warrior, the rogue vanished, cheapshot/gouge/kidney-shot stunned our rogue and blinded our healer. Once their warrior made it back from where i kited him, the fight ended in 10 seconds as our rogue died and our healer had 3 guys on him.
Looking at their gear they were full of season 2/3 gear while our group had a kara-equipped healer, a 1/2 pvp, 1/2 kara rogue and a 2-purple, rest blue enhance shaman who just hit level 70
It’s going to take us a LOOOOOOONG time to get any sort of decent gear with the new rules they’re setting up

Bout the only silver lining I can see is that I personally REALLY like the battlegrounds and having a definitive objective.
Team style death-match is GREAT in a FPS game where the playing field is nice and level. This isn’t a real arena.
I can’t wait until Northrend when we get Lake Wintergrasp, a new battleground, and destructable buildings and siege weapons.
