Mods: progressive or detrimental to gameplay?

addons.jpgBasically are mods a good or a bad thing? I can’t imagine them being destructive to gameplay, then again I use maybe 3-4 mods at most. Scrolling combat text, Bagon, Cooling, and Omen is pretty much all I ever bother using at any given time. I have Atlas loot installed and up simply for those boring flights when I wanna take a look at some loot so I can make a wish list. I’m no cyborg I don’t like there being 40 different mods changing the UI and showing me 50 different meters and auto healing etc. That’s just stupid already and it defeats the purpose of the work and effort the developers have put into the way Warcraft looks and feels to me.

One forum poster (probably an alt or something not 100% sure yet) was explaining that they couldn’t get into a guild because they didn’t have any mods installed and refused to use Ventrilo to communicate.

Listen, I’m all for free rights and playing how you want, it’s you $15. But seriously this has to be the single most idiotic thing I have ever read, and the thread got so long it was locked down destined to fall to the bottom of the forums forever.

Even Drysc put his two cents in for a while before the thread died.

I think one of the strong points of the game, and one that’s actually strengthened since release, is the ability to play how you want to play. You aren’t forced to conform to someone else’s standards, you have just as much ability and right to create a guild with your own outlook on the game/features and proceed how you wish. There are likely others that share the same viewpoint and will gladly join someone that takes a minimalist approach.

Now, that said, you’re certainly not going to progress as easily or quickly without those tools. The far reaches of the game have to take into account that those attempting to reach it are using every measure possible to gain any bit of advantage they can. Meaning the rules of the game have to assume you’re using those tools, and without them you’ll certainly face a more difficult time progressing.

I wouldn’t worry about it though, you’re still leveling and you have a ton of content to see and experience. You don’t need a guild that’s going to tell you how to play, and not all of them do. Good luck to ya. (src)

Blizzard has always embraced the modding community, that’s why all their RTS games come with map editors so players can -gasp- make their own playing experience and share it with others.

Over the years WoW has been online the community has created mods that for the most part have been integrated into the default UI by Blizzard including voice over IP. Why then if you are given the tools FREELY to become better at playing the game, would you throw a hissy fit about the dependency the players have on these mods. You can sure do a raid boss fight without a threat meter but expect it to be 10 times more chaotic and less successful as a result, but it’s still doable.

My advice to the OP is simply this, next time you want to put up a fence, don’t use a hammer. Use two big blocks of wood instead and see how far that gets you.
