Farewell to Outland, we will miss you!!!

So with Wrath coming tonight and everyone making a mad dash to Level 80, no one is really doing much in the game except a few last minute achievements and cleaning out some inventory. I thought now would be a good time to ask our readers what their impression was of outland and what you will remember the most as you leave it behind? Will you miss the raids and boss fights? Will you miss the zones and creatures in them? Will you long for some of the quests and rep grinds? Will you be talking about how ridiculously difficult heroic Durnholde was? Will you remember how Moroes gave your guild headaches for a few weeks as you tried to get him down for the first time?

Myself, I will miss the awe of walking up to that portal in blasted lands and wondering whats on the other side. I will miss the mystery that always seemed to loom over your head as you leveled up.

I won’t miss the elevator boss in SSC, or the Void Reaver owning me when I’m on the last kill of my quest. I won’t miss the cubes surrounding Magtheridon, or the flame trails of Archimonde.

In all I was very happy with the Burning Crusades. I can’t wait to see what grand adventure Blizzard takes us all on next. Many of the things we didn’t like about the previous versions of the game give us an occasion to say “Remember when….” . Remember when you had a great time in a game that brought you together with a bunch of cool people and you made a bunch new friends.

  1. I second the Dark Portal experience… walking up to it for the first time and taking the leap through was awesome. The hectic feeling of battle immediately after passing through was even better.

I’ll never forget my inspiration to get from level 63 to 70… I was in Zangar and an Ally came swooping down on me and a teammate… we fled, but were run down. My dream was to get to 70, get a mount, and do the same to others. I haven’t stopped since :)

  2. Several things I liked on Outlands, since you talked about moroes, “Unannouced visitors! Preparations must be made!” and then he starts slashing everyone and the “Ohhh! I had gone and made a mess!”. Yes it was frustrating sometimes, specially when we didn’t had any paladin or dwarf strike team at the ready, but provided some really fun moments.

Several boss encounters were really fun too. The only parts I think I wont miss is the randomness of some encounters. For example, one day in Underbog heroic, The Black Stalker keep pushing people out of the room with levitation, when he did that to a dps it was no problem, when it was to the tank it keep placing him on the reset zone and we had to restart the event. And that night he probably keep deciding that the tank should be outside of the room and for some reason keep reseting. O.o

At the same time, loved karazan, at the time I had done it the encounters were hard for our guild gear level. But overtime when we were better geared, and kara was trivial already all this before 3.0 patch, we tryed to do 25 raids and simply didn’t managed to gather the required people for it. In the end we eventually jumped over 25 raids and went to ZA, but the progression jump was too harsh when you compare the jump between heroics and karazan.

Loads of things had been reviewed, but I think the feature that was mostly missing, the dual spec thing, would allowed to reduce the queue wait times on instances. As usually people gather more then one set of gear, but aren’t willing to switch roles and spend all the money they generated that day paying a tax to play.

  3. I will never forget seeing a fel reaver for the first time…I literally stopped in my tracks and was like, ‘what the F*** was THAT!’, lol.

I’ll never forget banging my head against the wall that was Prince in Kara…infernal drop locations + really bad luck = 4,000 attempts before we got lucky on the drops and fonally got him.

Outland introduced me to the concept of falling off of the edge of the world as well…I had never done such a thing in Azeroth, and sadly, I did it quite a few times in Outland :)

‘Welfare Epics’ were a huge slap in the face to me personally. For the first time ever, below average players and totally clueless 11 year olds were able to trade just time for epic class items and in the process, give an illusion (at least at first) that they had worked hard and had a working knowledge of game mechanics and their class. The number of raids and instance runs that failed because of this false assumption must be staggering, lol.

Outlands also gave us new ‘high fantasy’ artwork and models, and although it was kinda cool at first, I longed for the old days when my sword actually looked like, well, a real sword!

Reputation grinding was a real pain in the ass, to put it politely, and on the opposite end of the spectrum, daily quests were a welcome source of cash. (The amount of gold people have banked up thanks to dailies and the resulting effects on the server economy are a blog all in itself)

All in all, I look back on Outland with mixed feelings…it was awesome at first, with many great and welcome changes, but over time, it wasn’t able to hold my attention like Azeroth once did.
