Dealing with Addons & Patch 2.4
Some of us are veterans, initiated warriors in the war that is Patch Day. But for many this is a new and exciting thing. It’s both a great and a horribly frustrating thing when a patch goes live (at least one this big) because it usually breaks your addons.
I posted earlier about the new Addons Survival Guide provided to us by WOWInterface and I can safely say that this thing is a godsend. I have been using it all morning as many of your favorite addon sites will be bogged down or completely offline due to the massive increased traffic.
Here are a few tips that will hopefully get you back on your feet.
For starters keeping yourself informed is key. Checking the aforementioned website is a great way to keep up to date as they have provided links for the most popular addons’ homepage (if any) as well as the other mirrors and site where the mod can be downloaded. Most of the big shots are going to have their product updated by this week but there are some cases where it can take weeks for a mod to work properly again. I know for a fact that Omen threat Meter (thank jeebus) is working as is Scrolling Combat text and Bagnon (WOOOO!) but there are countless other addons (that I use like windfurytally, Atlas, and cooling) that are not online yet for Patch 2.4 but might be ready to go hopefully soon.
Make sure that you check the “Load out of date addons” button in your addon menu (character select screen). This will load all of your mods but at the same time the outdated ones that may possibly not be compatible with the new patch will be very buggy and may cause some serious problems. So you just turn those off.
Another option open to you is to go back to the basics. Have NO addons at all and wait a few days until your mods have been updated and good to go. As well if you use an automated update system like Ace and such then none of this is really going to be much of an issue for you.
Either way keep your chin up as with all things worth getting there has to be patience. Things usually level out by the end of the week whenever a patch goes live barring any serious game breaking bug or exploit but the majority of those are caught on the PTRs before release.
